Let’s face it, there is a plethora of great and not so great advice out there about creating online courses and I, for one, love creating and reimagining online education.

When you are brand new to the online space or even a seasoned professional, an online course may be your holy grail to passive online income. Can you say do the work once and sell your course hundreds or thousands of times? Heck yeah!

But they’re a lot of things you really don’t know until you start building your online course. Things that, if you have not considered or even thought about them before you even start the creation process can leave you tired, confused and downright stressed.

Essentially you are priming your audience. You want to prep them. If all of a sudden, you just launch without any type of pre-established momentum, you are more than likely going to fall flat. Basic laws of physics. Write two or three high-quality blog posts around your launch topic and spread them out before your big launch date!

Always be Laser-Focused on the Things That Have the Highest Priority

It’s okay to plan, really it’s okay.

Sometimes we get so caught up in adrenaline that we start creating our courses, full guns blazing, but never really sit down and think everything through.

Remember the 80/20 rule.

This states that 20 percent of the work you do produces 80 percent of the results.

So, if you find yourself working too much and too hard, remember to work smarter not harder. That’s the name of the game when you are an online course creator. You owe it to yourself and to your audience to stay sane through the entire process. Planning and good ol’ sheet and paper will save you hours of busy work in the end.

Do What You Love

It sounds so simple, right? Do what you love and the money will follow.

It’s simple but it’s true and it’s easy to lose your ‘why’ in the process of course creation. Find a course topic that you are passionate about, instead of one that just makes money.

Yes, passive income is great but if you hate the process then you will hate the outcome and that will always leave you unsatisfied. When you are creating something you love and that is also in demand, the money will come and it will feel good.

Imposter Syndrome is in full effect online. Keeping close to your core values and your why will be the key to playing the long game when it comes to online course creation and online business.

Be True to You and Identify Your Strengths and Weaknesses

I will not lie, this is something that has plagued me since I started The Optimum You.

This might come easy to some but for others, like me, just the simple act of admitting you have weaknesses is enough to send you into a cardiac arrest. It’s important to be honest about what you know and what you don’t know — what you should do and what you shouldn’t be doing.

When you are an online course creator you should be spending most of your time on the things that you do very well.

Is content creation your strength?

Awesome, spend most of your time creating pure joy.

Does WordPress make you want to scrape your nails on a chalkboard because nothing can be more painful then technology?

Great, outsource that part.

When you do too much of the things you’re weak at doing, you will lose the joy of your business as well as suffer as a result.

Surround Yourself with the Right Team

This has to be my favorite hack.

The value of having a great team behind you cannot be measured but trust me, when you finally have the resources to build a great team, you’ll say to yourself, “Why didn’t I do this sooner?”

A team can mean so many things to different people, a team can be hiring a rockstar group of contractors, a team can be a group of business colleagues that keep you accountable but also keeps you sane.

The most successful online course creators know that they need to ask for help when it’s important. You can get to where you want to go faster with the right support helping you along the way. All in all, remember to trust your gut and your judgment.

Being an online course creator can be one of the most rewarding things that you can do in your business.

We can get lost in our head at times and the passive income is a big draw but remember who you are creating courses for, your online audience.

Keep them in the loop, get them involved, ask them questions and let them know what’s coming next.
